Abortions in Memphis

MCRH specializes in abortion services. We are a licensed abortion provider, and our physicians are Obstetrician-Gynecologists who are licensed to practice in the state of Tennessee. Our staff supports each woman while she is in our facility before, during, and after her procedure.

We perform abortions from 6 to 14 weeks since a woman's last normal menstrual period (LNMP), and offer two options, a surgical abortion and a medication abortion. See below for more information on each option.

Surgical First Trimester Abortion

The surgical abortion option uses a method called aspiration, also commonly known as a vacuum or manual aspiration. For this option, you must be between 6 weeks and 14 weeks pregnant based on your last normal menstrual period.

How much does a surgical abortion cost?

  • $400.00 - This fee includes:
    • All lab work
    • Ultrasound for gestational sizing only
    • Patient education session
    • Pre-procedure medicines
    • Pap smear, if medically indicated
    • Surgical abortion procedure
    • Post-procedure medicines
    • Prescription for birth control
    • 24-hour emergency contact
    • Post-abortion follow-up 2 to 6 weeks after the abortion

What happens during your surgical abortion appointment?

  • You will complete a medical history, including information about your past and current health.
  • You will have lab tests done, including a test for anemia and Rh factor, and we will check your vital signs to make sure you are in good health for the procedure.
  • You will have an ultrasound done to determine the size of the pregnancy.
  • You will spend time with a patient educator discussing your pregnancy options, medical history, risks of the procedure, future plans for birth control, and any other questions you may have about your procedure.

This procedure usually takes 5-15 minutes, but more time may be needed to prepare your cervix. Time is also needed for talking with your provider about the procedure and future plans for birth control.

How safe is the surgical abortion?

Surgical abortion procedures are very safe. But there are risks with any medical procedure. The risks increase the longer you are pregnant. Possible risks include:

  • an allergic reaction
  • blood clots in the uterus
  • incomplete abortion - part of the pregnancy is left inside the uterus
  • infection
  • injury to the cervix or other organs
  • undetected ectopic pregnancy
  • very heavy bleeding

Most often, these complications are simple to treat with medicine or other treatments. In extremely rare cases, very serious complications may be fatal.

Medication First Trimester Abortion

The medication abortion option uses a medicine known as mifepristone, also commonly known as RU-486 or the abortion pill. For this option, you must be between 5 weeks and 8weeks pregnant based on your last normal menstrual period. Some of the medicines used in the medication abortion may cause serious birth defects if the pregnancy continues. So, in the unlikely case that it doesn't work, you will need to have a surgical abortion to end the pregnancy.

How much does a medication abortion cost?

  • $475.00. This fee includes:
    • All lab work
    • Ultrasound for gestational sizing only
    • Patient education session
    • Pre-procedure medicines
    • Medication abortion and all accompanying medicines
    • Prescription for birth control
    • Follow-up call with a medical practitioner 24 hours after visit
    • 24-hour emergency contact
    • Post-abortion follow-up 10 to 14 days after the abortion

What happens during your medication abortion appointment?

  • You will complete a medical history, including information about your past and current health.
  • You will have lab tests done, including an anemia and a Rh test, and we will check your vital signs to make sure you are in good health for the procedure.
  • You will have an ultrasound done to determine the size of the pregnancy.
  • You will spend time with a patient educator discussing your pregnancy options, medical history, risks of the procedure, future plans for birth control, and any other questions you may have about your procedure.
  • You will schedule a follow-up appointment for 10 to 14 days after your abortion.

What happens during the medication abortion procedure?

  • You will meet with the doctor and discuss how to use the abortion pill.
  • The doctor will give you the abortion pill to take at the clinic.
  • The doctor will give you a second medication, misoprostol, to take at home in 24 to 48 hours.
  • You will also be given some pain and anti-nausea medications.

How effective is the medication abortion?

The abortion pill is very effective. It works about 97 out of every 100 times. You'll follow up with a health care provider after your abortion so you can be sure that it worked and that you are well.
