What is Emergency Contraception (EC)?

  • Emergency contraception is birth control that prevents pregnancy after sex.
  • You can use emergency contraception right away - or up to three days (72 hours) after sex - if you think your birth control failed, you didn't use birth control, or you were forced to have sex.
  • The copper IUD can also be used as emergency contraception when inserted within 72 hours of unprotected sex. Please, call our clinic for more information about this option.
  • Emergency contraception makes it less likely you will get pregnant, but is not as effective as birth control used before or during sex.
  • If you are sexually active or planning to be, don't use emergency contraception as your only protection against pregnancy.
  • Emergency contraception does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases/infections.

How do I get Emergency Contraception (EC)?

  • You can get emergency contraception at MCRH by appointment only.
  • Emergency contraception is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for non-prescription sale to women and men 18 and older in the United States with a valid state issued photo ID.
  • If you are under 18 years old, you will still need to get EC with a prescription.

How does Emergency Contraception (EC) work?

  • Researchers have identified several ways that emergency contraceptive pills likely prevent pregnancy. How they might work in your case depends on where you are in your monthly menstrual cycle when you use them.
  • No matter when you take emergency contraception, EC will not cause an abortion.

Does Emergency Contraception cause an abortion?

  • No, using emergency contraceptive pills prevents pregnancy after sex. It does not cause an abortion.
  • Emergency contraceptive pills or the IUD as emergency contraception work before pregnancy begins.
  • Emergency contraception will not work if a woman is already pregnant, and it also will not harm the woman or her fetus.
